Applications for Ngā Aho Shorts 2022 are now closed
Ngā Aho Shorts in association with the NZ Film Commission, is calling all Māori creatives with a factual or scripted short film idea. Apply now for the 2022-2023 season of Ngā Aho Shorts funding.
Our shorts programme is excited to grow tangata whenua, te ao, te reo & tikanga māori to the world.

Ngā Aho Shorts is a development pathway focused on empowering tangata whenua and te reo me ngā tikanga Māori within the film and screen industry. In pursuit of this, the 2022-23 season of Ngā Aho Shorts features a number of developments, each driven by the following outcomes.
Āta Pūrākau
Encourage Māori to write pūrakau/stories to explore, adapt traditional stories in contemporary contexts;
Now includes Scripted or Factual.
Āta Wairua Auaha
Enhance and enable the creative Māori producer for the production and distribution of authentic Māori stories;
Delivery to Mahuru 2023.
Āta Ringatohu
Develop the capability and confidence of emerging Māori directors to share their vision of moving image story-telling;
Encourage Rangatahi voices.
Āta Tikanga Mātatika
Encourage growth and awareness of a code of ethics and provide for Cultural Safety.
Advocate and support the growth of te reo and tikanga Māori.

It’s all part of our work to encourage the growth of te reo Māori me ngā tikanga in film, by supporting those wanting to grow their storytelling skills in te reo Māori. We also encourage the use of te reo taketake in your scripting.
The successful teams will be invited to an exclusive development wānanga with industry mentors, to help prepare you for production.
Ngā Aho Whakaari will facilitate these wānanga and act as Executive Producer to support your kaupapa.
Ngā Aho Shorts have supported amazing stories and teams through this kaupapa, which have gone on to showcase at film festivals nationally & internationally.
The talent and connections fostered under Ngā Aho Shorts continue to forge important pathways throughout the local and international screen industry.
